So, what exactly is "The Creative Habit"? For me, I can remember from the time I was a child, working on some kind of creative/artsy project that I wanted to challenge myself with,
every
single
day.
This became a life habit, daily creativity for me is an essential part of my being.
I get intrigued by a new medium, and the urge to explore it, to see how far I can take it, how deep can it sustain my creative vision with it, how can I apply it to other projects. I have found that learning to work with different mediums and new techniques all adds to the ability to apply creative problem solving to various projects. How can I figure out how to get my hands and tools to make this idea in my head a reality?
In the examples below, 1. I love horses, I really wanted to photograph them showing the vibrant beauty I see and feel in them. I spent so much time, daily, with the camera, now I rarely even think about it in my hands. Its become a fluid part of my creative expression, at times feeling as if my eye and shutter finger are linked.
2. I love beadwork, and it is such a unique form of creativity for me. I have been beading for about 15 years, getting comfortable with increasingly difficult techniques all the time. I came up with the idea of combining my beading skills with the love of horses. So I decided to cover a horse sculpture support with freeform beading, and wow, did I ever learn a lot about shaping beadwork, while also maintaining the integrity of my vision of equine beauty!
3. I found this stunning rectangular focal piece of Labradorite gemstone, but it had no hole in it like a bead, and looked its best in the vertical position - very hard to design with. I used all the beading skills from the previous project, and again the vision of beauty, to make a freeform necklace with balanced asymmetry to truly compliment this gorgeous stone.
So, The Creative Habit, can lead in all kinds of directions! However, it does take hard work and commitment to ones passion to establish it, which leads to the freshness and fulfilment that comes with it. And yes, it happens every single day!
